The father of O'Grady is Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. She was raised by her grandparents in Wheaton within Illinois and graduated in 1981 with a degree from Wheaton-North High School. She appeared in a few commercials before moving to Los Angeles in 1986. Her first assignment was to model in the company of Montgomery Ward. She also featured in a variety of commercials. She was the star of her debut on the big screen in the 1988 romantic comedy she's Having a Baby, and then was cast in the regular part on the ABC drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany.
